Katherine Unger

Born in Boulder, Colorado, Katherine has lived and painted in New York, Maryland, Texas and California.  She received her BFA from Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon.  She currently resides in Nevada City, California.

"My recent work is an attempt to explore the relationships between gesture and thought, body and space. The individuals are detached from context, and their gestures express an inner dialogue that depends on solitude. I emphasize the dramatic effect of light and dark as a means to convey emotion and evoke sanctuary.

The paintings of hands are subjects in themselves, and being larger than life, they interact with the viewer. They are meant to have a surreal quality in that they float in space, and emerge from an ambiguous environment set deep in shadow"
