HISTORY
Elijah Jenkins founded Flatmancrooked as a fiction e-zine in 2007. In March of 2008, Elijah met James Kaelan. Elijah and James partnered to re-launch Flatmancrooked as a full-service, independent online and print publishing house. They intended to do this without taking out any loans and without selling any advertising for their anthology. They received a $5,000 grant from a local patron of the arts, and in September of 2008, Flatmancrooked published it’s first anthology, First Winter, which included the work of Ha Jin, and a new Jorge Luis Borges translation. In August 2008, Deena Drewis began working at Flatmancrooked as an intern. She quickly moved up the ranks to Senior Editor, and in April 2009 was offered a full partnership in the business. Since that time, Flatmancrooked has held events and readings on both coasts, published three more print books, has four in various stages of production, has been asked to speak at myriad universities, and has partnered on various ventures with the likes of McSweeney’s, Opium, AWP, and SxSW. In 2010, Flatmancrooked will launch the Zero Emission Book—a project that will take viable and green publishing to a brand new level.
WHAT WE DO
Flatmancrooked publishes a fiction and poetry anthology, novellas under the New Novella imprint, and novels under the HyperLimited imprint. Flatmancrooked operates the Launch program, an innovative, front-end monetization model for emerging authors. Flatmancrooked very actively tours its authors and reaches its patrons through various events. Flatmancrooked awards three prizes annually: the Fiction Prize (debut judge: Aimee Bender), the Poetry Prize (debut judge: Mary Karr), and the New Novella Prize (judged by the Flatmancrooked editorial staff). Flatmancrooked maintains an extremely active online magazine, featuring book reviews, articles and commentary on the publishing industry, and new short fiction.
