Guest Judge: Mary Karr

This November, HarperCollins will release Mary Karr’s new memoir, Lit, a follow-up to her New York Times bestselling non-fiction sensation, The Liar’s Club (which won the PEN/Martha Albrand Award for nonfiction, the Texas Institute Award for Letters, and was a finalist for The National Book Critics Circle Awards).

Karr is, perhaps more importantly, an award-winning poet. Her poetry grants include The Whiting Writer’s Award, an NEA, a Radcliffe Bunting Fellowship, and a Guggenheim. She has won prizes from Best American Poetry as well as Pushcarts for both her poetry and essays. Her four volumes of poetry are Sinners Welcome (HarperCollins, 2006), Viper Rum (Penguin, 1998), The Devil’s Tour (New Directions, 1993), and Abacus (Wesleyan, 1986). Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic Monthly, Poetry, and Parnassus.

Karr is the Jesse Truesdell Peck Professor of Literature at Syracuse University and was the weekly poetry editor for the Washington Post Book World’s “Poet’s Choice” column, a position canonized by Robert Hass, Ed Hirsch, and Rita Dove. She lives in Syracuse, New York and New York City.

The Rules:

Entries are single poems. The top 20-40 poems (depending on length) will be collected and published in Flatmancrooked’s Slim Volume of Contemporary Poetry: 2010 (due out spring, 2010).

1st Place: $500, featured online, designation online and in print as the recipient of the 2010 Flatmancrooked Poetry Prize, and 3 complimentary copies of Flatmancrooked’s Slim Volume of Contemporary Poetry: 2010, in which the winning poem will be featured.

2nd Place: $300, featured online, designation online and in print as 2nd place in the 2010 Flatmancrooked Poetry Prize, and 2 complimentary copies Flatmancrooked’s Slim Volume of Contemporary Poetry: 2010, in which the poem will be featured.

3rd Place: $100, featured online, designation online and in print as 3rd place in the 2010 Flatmancrooked Poetry Prize, and 2 complimentary copies Flatmancrooked’s Slim Volume of Contemporary Poetry: 2010, in which the poem will be featured.

Finalists (place 4th-10th): featured online, designation online and in print as a finalist for the 2010 Flatmancrooked Poetry Prize, and 1 complimentary copy Flatmancrooked’s Slim Anthology of Collected Poetry: 2010, in which the poem will be featured.

Semi-Finalists (place 11th-20th) will be featured online and published in Flatmancrooked’s Slim Volume of Contemporary Poetry: 2010.

All entrants will receive an ebook copy of Flatmancrooked’s Slim Volume of Contemporary Poetry: 2010 upon its publication.

2009 Flatmancrooked Prize
for Excellent Writing Done During a Period of Great Fiscal Renewal

Aimee Bender (author of The Girl in the Flammable Skirt, An Invisible Sign of My Own, Willful Creatures, recipient of the Pushcart Prize and professor of creative writing at University of Southern California) is our guest judge.

1st place receives $1000.00 and publication in the final anthology of ‘08/’09 season.

Top 10 finalists will also be published in the final anthology and get special recognition on the website.

The entry-fee is $15 and the first 50 people to enter get a copy of Flatmancrooked’s First Winter, which features new fiction from Jorge Luis Borges and National Book Award-winner, Ha Jin.
