We had a great release party for FIRST WINTER this weekend in Sacramento. Newsbeat was kind enough to host Flatmancrooked and its robot, who in the middle of the release did the robot, which was super meta. We want to thank everyone who came out for the party, and for those of you who couldn’t (because of geographical limitations), know that we missed you. If you still haven’t picked up a copy of FIRST WINTER, you can get one via the market link. You may want to pick up a subscription while you’re at it, because the next anthology will include work from some truly amazing writers, not to mention giants of the writing world.
For those of you in the Capital City, we’ve got a wild event this coming weekend. “UNSAFE: White Folk” is coming to Pangaea Café (2743 Franklin Blvd.) on Saturday, October 18th.“Unsafe” will feature readings by Joe Wenderoth (author of LETTERS TO WENDY’S), as well as new stories from "Henrytown," as performed by Chris “Whitey” Erickson. If you want to know what you get when Whitey reads, check out the video. Truly astounding stuff. The book will be for sale at the event, so bring all your friends. It’s going to be trouble. For more event information, go to here.
Lastly, we were on the radio a couple of times last week, and we have those linked under press on the fmC Anthology page. Catch y’all soon.
Sincerely,
The Editors, fmC
“flatmanCROOKED – First Winter,” which we put up for pre-sale a fortnight ago, has been selling very well. Orders have been so abundant that we are on the verge of having to print that second, less valuable edition (please re-read the previous sentence for subtext). The Paté á Alcatraz has also sold out. Our apologies. In celebration of the forthcoming official release of “fmC – First Winter,” we’ve added a number of events. We will be on “Dr. Andy’s Literature and Technology Hour” radio program on the 8th of October. On the 10th of October we’re hanging out with Jeffrey Callison on “Insight,” the “Talk of the Nation” of Northern California. The following day we’re actually releasing the anthology in a store—Newsbeat, specifically, in midtown Sacramento, as part of the Second Saturday mayhem.
Then on the 29th of October, Kaelan Smith will be in Santa Barbara to bullshit about writing and editing at the UCSB Literature Symposium, from 4-5PM at the Old Little Theatre. Finally, we’ll be in San Francisco on the 15th of November at Koko’s. Oh, and we’ll probably be in Portland. And Seattle. And Los Angeles. That is almost all for now. Get our book, which as you’ll remember contains Borges and Ha Jin. And finally, this Wednesday we’re going to sing karaoke with Joe Wenderoth and somebody named Whitey. Glamour, we have it by the bucket.

Flatmancrooked Publishing, to our complete surprise and delight, has closed for the foreseeable future to all advertising. This week fmC secured an underwriter for the entire season (5 releases) and, in accordance with our hair-brained ideals, will not be putting ads in the print anthology. Instead, each book will be filled full with electric fiction and irresponsible extras that will, most likely, incite hate mail. We know you'll love it.

We've maintained a steady pace publishing online pieces, but now will be posting a new story every week. As a stopgap measure, and we think a damn fine idea, we'll soon be working with at least one columnist/blogger/journalist who will produce and publish on the site once a week. Following the grand election, our Sacramento release is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 8th, our San Francisco release for Nov. 15th, and our Los Angeles release to follow shortly after. We've recently acquired James Bartels' Flag Day (our new favorite holiday) and Jim O'Loughlin's Bartleby the Temp for print. Miss these and be filled full with regret.

flatmanCROOKED has obtained a story from Ha Jin. A recipient of the PEN/Faulkner, PEN/Hemmingway & National Book Award, Ha Jin's work has made him one of the most distinguished living Chinese-American writers. His new story, Children Like Enemies, will debut in "Flatmancrooked - First Winter," slated for release on November 15th. Ha Jin's new collection of short fiction, which will include Children Like Enemies, is due out in 2009.
